You can expect a warm, welcoming environment where your goals for living a healthy life are supported and always encouraged. At MensanaSF, we listen to our patients and form a collaborative relationship with them to work together towards mental health. As Dr. G has been known to say to her patients, “it’s your body so you let ME know how you feel on the medication.” We are here to listen to you and your needs, not prescribe blindly what we think you need without your input. You can always expect the highest quality of care delivered in a sensitive, caring way.
As a “DO” or Doctor of Osteopathy, Dr. G received extra training in the inner workings of the nervous system, muscles, and the dynamics of how the body works. She trained at an osteopathic medical school and completed a traditional residency in psychiatry. This training informs her practice of medicine and psychiatry in that she is always looking at the “whole picture” and is interested in thinking outside of the box when it comes to mental healthcare treatment. She believes that there must be a balance between traditional, Western-style medicine and more alternative, holistic treatments, and this balance is successfully achieved through the collaborative relationship and trust between patient and provider. Basically, she can and does prescribe medications when appropriate and necessary, but also considers other alternatives to meds when possible. She is a doctor who truly listens to her patients’ needs and concerns.
Dr. G trained under Dr. Johnny O’Reardon who was instrumental in the research studies which got TMS, or Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation, approved by the FDA for major depressive disorder. Since Dr. G’s philosophy to approaching psychiatry is holistic, she is drawn to learning and perfecting alternative therapies in mental healthcare. Offering TMS as an alternative to traditional medications fits in perfectly with this philosophy.
TMS is a noninvasive procedure which uses stimulation through magnetic fields to stimulate a part of the brain called the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) to stimulate those nerve cells and improve and treat the symptoms of depression. TMS is a highly effective and tolerable alternative to antidepressant medication. Dr. G and her staff can answer any questions you have about TMS or put you in contact with other patients who have offered to share their experiences with TMS treatment. TMS is now covered by most insurances.
We are in-network with most major insurance plans, including Anthem Blue Cross, United/Optum Healthcare and Blue Shield/Magellan. If your insurance isn’t listed above, don’t worry; we can work with your insurance company to see if you are eligible for out-of-network benefits and we can serve as a liaison between you and your insurance company. We can check whether your insurance offers these benefits or if your out-of- pocket expenses can be reimbursable through a health-savings or flex spending account.
